I assisted a friend and peer in an identity theft case and I can tell you, with no fear of repudiation, that neither state or federal agencies were the least bit concerned in the instance of $28,000.00 + of fraudulent charges.

Zip - Zero - Zed - Nada

The hardest creditor with whom I dealt?
Citibank...who refused to acquiesce or step down one inch from asserting the legality of the fraudulent credit card account that the perpetrators opened to run up $4700.00 in bogus charges.

Their collection bloodsuckers, Portfolio Recovery Associates, still badger the man and the 'debt' is four years out of statute.

Identity theft is a crime that often emotionally cripples the victim.
And if you are accursed enough to be the victim you are on your own in most cases.

The paperwork is ponderous and repetitive . The aggrieved creditors treat the victim like something that is stuck to their shoe. Local law enforcement thinks that they are doing you a favor by taking your complaint and local district attorneys won't give you air in a jug.

Both state and federal law has changed since that time with the greatest benefit accruing to victims fortunate enough to be domiciled in a state which permits any legal action pursued to enjoy venue of their own jurisdiction rather than that of the perpetrator.
